Musgrave Pencil Company first made its mark in 1916. Founder James Raford Musgrave, known as Colonel Musgrave, put his company on the map selling Tennessee red cedar slats to companies in Great Britain and Germany. By the early 1960s, the company no longer sold slats abroad and had focused its attention on manufacturing. Today, the Shelbyville, Tennessee, factory is one of the country’s last remaining family-owned pencil manufacturers — producing more than 30 billion custom writing utensils over the past century.
